This current research demo and upcoming scale project utilizes a patented OysterBreak design made from patent-pending OysterKrete at Rockefeller Refuge, LA. LSU researchers monitor this ongoing project and have published papers on interim results.
The Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge research project uses 20" diameter OysterKrete rings stacked to create semi-artificial oyster reefs. The project began with installation in 2007. First generation oysters cemented the rings increasing the stability and integrity of the entire OysterBreak reef. Second generation oysters in 2009 further unified the structure of the artificial habitat. Habitat improvements included shoreline stabilization and lessening of encroachment.
